This heat is the new normal (and I hate it)
Jim Nielsen recently wrote how blogging can just be stating the obvious, so here we go Jim: it’s too sodding hot.
The last 3 days broke the record for the hottest June day. Yep, 3 days in a row. We’ve had yet another unprecedented heat wave following last year’s, and the year before that, etc. It’s been bloody unbearable. You can manage in the shade, but if you’re out in the sun or living above the ground floor, it’s hellish.
You know it’s bad when an event about how the world could adapt to extreme heat is cancelled by extreme heat.

The sad thing is, compared to mainland Europe (and especially western France), we got off easy. I couldn’t imagine how torturous it must get over 35C. The thought of experiencing 40+ is unfathomable.
Thankfully for us the heat tapered off last night with some clouds and a cool breeze. My south-facing room was at a steady 27C – any other day and that’d be hot, but after half a week of hitting the 30s, it felt as cool as the Arctic.
We’re not equipped for heat as a country. Especially not like this. At what point do we all throw our hands up and admit it’s the norm?
I wish I had more to say. I wish I had better things to say. But I’ve been so battered by the heat that I can’t think straight. Apparently we’ve got more of this extreme heat coming next month. I wish I could hibernate through it.
It was never like this when I was a child.
